The Lore:

Icons are living reliquaries of dead saints, though any given Icon is likely to hold the remains of a half dozen common martrys as well. Resurrected, wiped of memories, and sealed in a riveted suit of iron, steel, and ivory. On the moon-colonies saints tend to be canonized with much more regularity to keep up with the demand for these armored guardians.

Icons were invented many years ago. After the Rotelex descended to Ghieh and murdered the exalted immortal King Korgull, the cult of the Dyad has faced a problem. The bones of their ancestors would no longer do their bidding. Skeletal hordes nearly toppled the great empires of the west, and were only stopped by the efforts of great heroes. The Icons were innovation based in ancient alchemy designed to replace the undead servants.
